Deciding the size of your gown or dress is extremely important so you need to be a part of this decision process. Our goal is to order you a gown or dress as close to your size as possible. Please keep in mind that dresses are ordered from standard size charts from the Designers so most dresses may require alterations.
Our Consultants will take your measurements and review them with you comparing them to the appropriate Designer’s size chart. We will suggest a size but ultimately the decision for size is yours.
Many Brides have ‘out of town’ bridesmaids that may not be able to make it to Modern Bride to be measured. We suggest they visit a local bridal shop to be professionally measured. It is imperative that measurements be taken accurately by a professional because special order items cannot be returned or exchanged. Keep in mind that when we give advice on sizing, we are basing it on the information you’ve provided. Since we are not taking the measurements ourselves we have to assume that the measurements provided are correct. The following measuring guidelines should be followed only if you are unable to visit us at Modern Bride.
Measuring Guidelines
Bust - Not your bra size! Measure the bust at the widest part of the back, straight across the top of the bust, NOT under the bust line.
Waist - Measure at your natural waistline which is the smallest part of your waist. Typically it’s an inch above your belly button.
Hips – Measure the widest parts of your hips, approximately 7” below your natural waistline.
Height – How tall you are without shoes is important as formal attire is typically designed for women approximately 5’8”.
How you are measured will dictate the fit of the dress. If you are measured tightly, the dress ordered will be a snug fit. If you are measured loosely, you dress fit also fit loosely.
Extra Length
Most Designers offer extra length. Designers suggest ordering extra length if you are taller than 5’8” with shoes on. If you are not sure if you need extra length it is always best to have too much length than not enough. Extra charges vary by Designer. Shorter lengths can be ordered for many bridal gowns but are not available for bridesmaids dresses.
Plus Sizes
Most Designers charge a different fee for dresses size 18 and up, often referred to as Plus Sizes. Fees vary by Designer.
